I wrote science-fiction novels and computer books before I became a senior writer at Wired magazine in the 1990s. When Chris Anderson took over as editor I realized that the magazine was heading in a direction that didn’t appeal to me, and I started looking around for other creative challenges. I began writing for Make magazine in 2005, and am now a regular columnist and contributing editor.

Meanwhile I began development of a unique rapid cooling system for a California laboratory where it is being tested for eventual application in emergency medicine. I coauthored a patent on the device.

My book Make: Electronics has become a primary resource for anyone wanting a hands-on primer. Now in its second edition, it has sold more than 150,000 printed copies in the United States and has been translated into six languages.

My other books for MakerMedia are Make: More Electronics and Encyclopedia of Electronic Components volumes 1, 2, and 3 (volume 3 in collaboration with Fredrik Jansson). In addition, I am the author of Make: Tools, a beginner’s guide to hand tools in the workshop.

Although born in the UK, I am a naturalized US citizen. I live in the Northern Arizona wilderness.
